There're plenty of game settings that can be adjusted for maximal playability on your system. As a PvP centered game and one which has no zones, I suggest that you adjust your settings down initially. You don't want to lose a fight for you lagged. Here are some suggestions to begin with. One in game there'll be a menu in the left upper corner of the screen. One box is labeled 'Options'. If you couldn't see it then right-click to make it pop up.
 
-Disable the Post Screen Effects option. This will increase your FPS.
-Minimize the fade-in/fade-out time for GUI
-Minimize your blood splatters
-Minimize your shadow options
-Minimize your vegetation density
-Minimize your dynamic lights
-Disable mouse smoothing. This will speed up your mouse movements tremendously.
 
I understand that you don't want to strip down graphics to such a point that you're playing Tetris. But start with these settings and then move them up slightly as you gauge a sense on how your system handles the starting town. If running the starting town smoothly, you'll also be able to deal with any big fights okay.
