Most of beginners do not need to join in a guild, it's just a lot easier to join a clan and have clan chat, a peace zone defended by clan. If you've sufficient friends it's certainly a better idea to just share a vent and use the party system to avoid clan warfare.
 
You really need not to join a giant alliance just one with enough members to hold a clan city or live a bit safely in an chaos city. The newbies phase tends to more fun unguilded IMO except for grouping with friends, though the learning curve is a bit steep initially.
